Like most Australians, we’ve been heartbroken to see the devastation and destruction caused by the recent bushfire crisis. A number of our partner properties have been affected, either directly or indirectly, and the cost to our wildlife and natural environment has been enormous.
Now, more than ever, regional Australia needs our support to recover. Although there are still many parts of the country that are no-go zones, there are many more that need the support of visitors to begin the long road to recovery.
We have designed this page to provide updates about affected regions & properties. We’ve also provided details about how we’re assisting and what else you can do to lend your support.
View Retreats Properties Affected
We’ll do our best to keep this information current and up to date, but it’s important to remember that this information can change at any time without notice. Unless listed here, all View Retreats properties are open for business and would really appreciate your support.
Southern Ocean Lodge
We are sad to report that world-renowned Southern Ocean Lodge was destroyed by the bushfires that swept across Kangaroo Island on 3rd January 2020. Fortunately, all staff and guests are safe, which is the main thing. Baille Lodges have committed to rebuilding the lodge and helping to rebuild the KI tourism industry, however, it is currently too early to estimate a date for re-opening.
Tanja Lagoon Camp
Due to the ongoing bushfire threat along the NSW South Coast, Tanja Lagoon Camp is currently closed until the end of January 2020.
Popular Regions Affected
Tourism Australia has released a travel alert page to highlight regions that are currently affected by bushfires. This page covers most of the popular regions across Australia and is updated daily;
For more specific information about each state and region, please visit the relevant fire or emergency service website;
How We’re Helping
We have made a donation to the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund in January 2020. This donation will go toward the vital work of supporting affected communities and people in evacuation and recovery hubs around the country.
On an ongoing basis, we are making a donation for every single confirmed booking to support the important work of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. As the crisis passes, FNPW’s work will be vital in reestablishing habit and critical wildlife corridors for the native species that have been decimated by this disaster.
How You Can Help
Whilst the scale of the devastation is unprecedented and difficult to comprehend, there are still many more regional areas that are not affected by bushfires that those that are. Regional communities and businesses in affected areas are suffering at the moment and need our support to remain in business and recover from the devastation.
1. If you’d still like to get away, please ask us about regions that are safe to travel to. Most of our properties are unaffected and the individuals and local businesses in these areas will be incredibly grateful for your support.
2. Consider donating to one of the incredible local fire services who have done a heroic job of responding to this crisis with the limited funds and resources available to them;
3. The recovery efforts on the ground are only just getting started and will likely continue for many years to come. Consider supporting some of the recovery efforts of some of these amazing organisations doing vital work across the country;

Our hearts go out to all those affected by this terrible event and we pray for a safe and speedy end to the current bushfire crisis.
