Nestled in the heart of idyllic Yarra Valley in Victoria, Australia, lies Botanica Editions. A retreat designed to revitalise and relax those who come to seek a reprieve from the bustle of daily living. Here, the old adage “Peace comes to those who seek it” is as true as it will ever be any place else.
That peacefulness starts as soon as you enter the property. With the majestic Mt. Riddell and Mt. Toolebewong as a backdrop, it begins to feel more like the escape one has come to expect. And there is a lot more nature to admire here. After all, Botanica Editions is the quintessential garden getaway, designed to blend in with its tranquil surrounds. Just the name itself conjures a vivid imagery of lush foliage, verdant shrubberies, fragrant herbs, and colourful flowers — and that’s exactly what you’ll find here.
This lush wonderland is truly a serene, idyllic escape. You will see no one around except those you’ve chosen to spend the holiday with. You will also discover plenty of spaces to enjoy solitude and just be yourself. There are gardens, pathways, and trails that meander through trees and creeks.
Tucked within this green retreat are the two houses of Botanica Editions: the Willow House and the Habitat House. Each one is private and occupies its own meticulously curated space. And each affords you the opportunity to nurture body, mind, and soul; to appreciate the beauty of nature, and to reflect and contemplate.
Both the Willow House and the Habitat House feature an eclectic mix of modern and repurposed furnishing, which has been carefully considered and placed throughout. A combination one might see as odd in thought but works well in reality. In fact, this gives both houses a unique and stylish interior that has become a signature of Botanica Editions.
One of the few all-new features of the houses are the kitchens and bathrooms. This is so because the owners, Greg Palmer and Karen Dickson, believe that these serve an important practical need: function. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you would need to prepare your own meal. It has a refrigerator, microwave oven, crockery and utensils, dishwasher, toaster, and kettle.
The other modern and sleek part of each house is the bathroom. It is blissfully heated and comes with a luxurious shower, hair dryer, and plush house slippers. Plants and garden views give warmth to an otherwise clean white space. Botanica Editions also supplies its own beautiful toiletries directly from their apothecary. Guests are usually so delighted by them that the owners decided to give handmade natural soaps as going-home presents for all guests.
The open-plan layout of both houses means that from the kitchen you are able to reach the dining or the living rooms within steps. The whole house is not immensely large, but it’s not small either. It is cosy and intimate, kind of what you would expect from a getaway that’s meant to bring people closer together, and where the focus is nature, rejuvenation, and simplicity rather than an ostentatious display of style and wealth.
The dining area seats four around a wooden round table. One of the many refurbished items in the property. Though you are here to disconnect, you don’t have to be completely cut off from the conveniences of modern life. The living room is furnished with a comfortable sofa and equipped with a television, Bose sound system, gas log fire, air-conditioning, and an mp3 player already loaded with a selection of music.
Each of the houses has two bedrooms which are furnished with queen-size beds, electric blankets, linen, and towels. The design is simple and the colour palette is soothing. The rooms are private and snug, but give off a feeling of being spacious. This is because they open to an outdoor deck with a view of the verdant gardens, extending the indoor space outside.
But what makes the whole property extra special is what you will find outside. Step onto the deck where you can sit on a restored wooden chair made extra comfy with plump pillows and a warm throw. Admire the lush greenery and breathe in the fresh air while you savour a delicious jolt of caffeine to start your morning, or a soothing glass of wine to cap a wonderful day. There’s also an al fresco dining area where you can relish the outdoors while sharing a beautiful meal with your companions.
Another unique feature of the property, and one most adored by guests, is the vegetable and herb gardens. Each house has their own, so you can harvest whatever you need without worries. Here, you don’t have to venture far to enjoy a garden-to-plate feast.
The best thing about staying at Botanica Editions is that all these wonderful experiences don’t stop at the property line. Tempting as the Willow and Habitat Houses are, you will also find the delights of the Yarra Valley and Healesville worth getting up for and exploring.
From Botanica Editions, shops, cafes, as well as the magnificent forest of Badger Weir are just a 3-minute drive away. Award-winning wineries and restaurants are also within proximate distance of the luxury garden retreat. Meanwhile, Healesville Sanctuary, a famous nature park and zoo, is a mere 2-minute stroll from the property.
Simply put, when you want to get away for some serious relaxation, you’ll find that Botanica Editions is a place to take it down a notch, decompress, and get into the rhythm of your surroundings.
